“While it would appear that guilt had eaten away at him resulting in the bedridden man that you see before you, the guilt (and hope) seems to have kept him going until he could express himself to both of them in the end.”
True. Between my own experiences and trying to break those cycles with my own son, versus the disappointments of other family members–hence King Tarni’s words about passing failures on to the next generation–as well as one reader telling me their own childhood experiences that this story brought to the fore, when a loved one lets you down to this extent you can clearly see where there is remorse or not.
Forgiveness, at first, seems like an impossible task. Sometimes parents make mistakes out of hate and cruelty. Others make mistakes out of ignorance, and the guilt follows them for the remainder of their days.
Hence why I can no longer take my own father at his word. It has taken time but every new letdown reinforces that distrust which doesn’t help anyone else that I meet.
You told me a little while back, Nolan, that this series had also helped you come to terms with some of your past. Jerrie was talking to me yesterday about his “Ugh–! SHARING moment” and we discussed a number of issues from our own past to what’s going on in this series.
Anything that reaches out and touches and releases old pain and disappointment only helps us to learn from the past and grow stronger for the future.
I hadn’t intended that Najimi’s saga would hit home for so many people, but it did. I get to realize and acknowledge my own growth as a writer, and I’m grateful to all my readers for letting me share this series with you.
Her dad is such a bastard! He lived rich…royalty…never had to worry where his next meal was coming from…while his poor daughter was a slave and a prostitute! THEN…now that he’s dying..he wants to say he loves Najimi??? Bullshit.
A lot of people have been in similar situations, Jerrie. When someone does you so wrong…then later they are sorry for it. You want to slug them but they are helpless and pathetic. Then they tell you they love you.
How do you process that?
This scene makes me angry…and sad at the same time. I guess issue 19 just rings in my mind…all that poor kid went through..all that happened to Najimi…didnt have to happen…it happened because of this bastard….I don’t know…he might really be sorry…but damn why does he wait until he’s on his death bed to try to make amends? HOW long was his poor daughter a slave? while his ass(and her mom too…I aint leaving HER ass out of this either) were living in friggin LUXURY ? Najimi is a better person than I would have been for sure…at least she had her sister…the ONLY family member to act like they CARE about this girl.
Jerrie, you forgot that Najimi was sold off AFTER her mother was assassinated. Queen Banaii was the one who always protected Najimi and encouraged her to be proud of who she was.
I have upset you so badly by this story that now you’re mad at everyone. o.O
In Episode 11, King Tarni WAS glad to hear Najimi was still alive, and especially Banara, who had missed her sister the most.
These last few months Banara kept Najimi from coming home because she knew Naji would be in danger if she did.
Yes, it all happened because of this bastard.
It was selling off Najimi just because of who she was that was the biggest betrayal of all. The spot Najimi is in is that she’s left not knowing WHAT to think, and she probably feels as much rage as you do.
HOW do you betray and sell out someone you love, your own child?
There’s no way to justify what Tarni did.
But the rest of the story has not been told yet.
I guess issue 19 is still in my mind. This poor girl….she needs some happiness now. Ok, her mom is off the hook, I did forget. I remember times when i was really struggling on my own….my dad wouldn’t lend me (LEND me mind you) two lousy dollars for gas…but two days later gave my uncle 3,000 dollars to help him out….oh well…I’ll give it a rest about Najimi’s dad and shut up
It looks like your dad to this day is not sorry for anything he did.
No, I really understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been through this with my stepfather. I’m not defending Najimi’s dad. Believe me. This is exactly why I said I was drained from writing and illustrating 19-23 all at once. I was up to my ears in it–in extensive 3D therapy for four months and now I am in a position to see things objectively, as-is.
You never realize how a story will hit home to others until you write it yourself. o.O
These scenes really hit home with me for sure. this shows you how powerful issue 19 was. you read that…then you see this scene..this guy…clueless as to what he’s done to his daughter….living in luxury….sleeping in a comfortable bed…while his daughter was a friggin slave….scrounging for a meal….ah, I said i would shut up and I’m still going…
Just means that as a writer, I did my job. Najimi is such a relatable character that people really do care what happens to her.
I told you a long time ago that if I was going to have a Princess tagging along with a bunch of heroes, she was going to have a backstory. 😉
let the raiding commence!
